Lipozene™ is an “as seen on TV” weight loss supplement marketed by the “Obesity Research Institute, LLC.” A video advertisement on the product’s Website states, “Are you struggling to lose weight? Do you feel like no matter what you do, you just can’t get rid of excess body fat? It’s not your fault!” The advertisement goes on to state that body fat “builds at the midsection, over the muscle” and gets worse over the years. “Body fat is increased by having kids, stress at work, lack of exercise and poor diet.” The ad claims that “The Obesity Research Institute has found the answer – it’s called Lipozene.” The product description states that this product is “clinically proven” to decrease body fat.
This product and its manufacturer appear to present a very “scientific,” research-based image. However, we found it puzzling that at the time of review, there appeared to be no research information posted on the Website to validate these claims. In fact, the actual information about this formulation seemed unusually sparse. Most alarming was the fact that a list of ingredients did not even seem to be provided at the time of review. We will evaluate this product based on its weight loss claims, and its overall credibility.

Although this product’s ingredients were not listed on the Website at time of review, we discovered through an internet search that it apparently contains only one ingredient: Glucomannan.

Glucomannan is a dietary fiber that may be useful in creating a feeling of fullness. However, this ingredient often works best with the appetite suppressant Hoodia, which acts on the hypothalamus of the brain to “trick” the body into feeling full. These two ingredients combined can act as a powerful, “dual-action” deterrent to food cravings. We felt this formulation might have been rendered much stronger if it advertised to included Hoodia.

Some consumers have expressed frustration in their customer service dealings with this company. One said, “When I saw an additional $59.99 that was charged to my account, I immediately called Lipozene and they told me they would remove the charge. About 2 weeks later, I saw another $29.99 charge on my online banking statement from Lipozene. Again, I called. The gentleman I talked to said they could not remove the charge like the previous saleswoman said, but they could break it up into payments!” This dieter also expressed dissatisfaction with the supplement: “I would not mind spending that much money on a product, but it does not work AT ALL.” A diet blogger also seemed to give this product the “thumbs-down”: “Would I buy Lipozene? Probably not.”

This product seems to rely on a single ingredient to produce weight loss results. While this may be a good ingredient, it generally works best when combined with other powerful components.
Some weight loss supplements combine Glucomannan with appetite suppressants like Hoodia, which address the curbing of appetite at a neurological level. Some of the better herbal formulations may also include Advantra-Z®, a potent metabolism booster that may burn up to 300 additional calories per day. The more reputable companies have customer service representatives available to answer consumer questions by phone. Some might even invite consumers to sample their products free of charge.
